Letter: Forum half-truth reporting hurtful

I am very disappointed in The Forum’s coverage in the case of my brother-in-law, Kurt Kennedy. After finally getting his day in court, The Forum chose to convict him in the media (story, March 26).

We were more than pleased that the felony charges against him were dropped. But within hours of the verdict, The Forum, along with WDAY and FOX news, only chose to report that he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. The Forum could have taken the high road with a headline that read, “Felony charges dropped in case of former chief.”

You could have reported the reason they were dropped is that the prosecution had no evidence to convict him of a crime that he did not commit. There could have also been stories about the good things Kurt has done for our community over the years and all the people he has helped. You could have reported about the many, many people who wrote character reference letters in support of his case.

It seems there is no consideration given to the people you hurt with these half-truth stories that you print. The people you victimize with your tabloid reporting have children, spouses, parents, grandparents, siblings, nieces and nephews who have to live and work in this community.

As people try to move on with their lives, you continue to report every tiny piece of dirt – just to sell a newspaper.
