Weather Talk: March continues trend of colder, drier than average

The month of March in Fargo-Moorhead continued the winter-long trend of being colder and drier than average. The average high in March was 36 degrees and the average low was 19 degrees, so the month’s average temperature was 5.5 degrees below the long-term average.

The one temperature record this March was a record cold high temperature of minus 8 on March 1. The coldest temperature of the month was 19 below on March 2. The warmest was 58 on March 13. Of the 31 March calendar days, 19 got above freezing at some point, while 12 stayed below freezing all day.

Precipitation for the month was 0.72 of an inch, which is 0.58 of an inch below average. Snowfall was 5.3 inches which is 3.8 inches below average. Of course, had the March 31 blizzard passed by 70 miles farther south than it did, we would have had a much higher precipitation total.
