Alleged home intruder in ND faces attempted murder charge

STANTON, N.D. - A man faces charges of attempted murder and criminal trespassing after entering a home Sunday in the small western North Dakota town of Golden Valley, authorities said.

Bret Daniel Knudson, 20, of Golden Valley, is accused of entering the home of Jeff Gegelman, according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department.

Mercer County State’s Attorney Jessica Binder said Knudson shot Gegelman, who allegedly returned fire and hit Knudson.

In addition to felony charges of attempted murder and criminal trespassing, Knudson faces misdemeanor charges of driving while his license was suspended and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the North Dakota Supreme Court website.

The affidavit could not be released until a judge signed the document, Binder said, but she confirmed that the charges stemmed from the weekend shooting.

Knudson was being held at the Mercer County Jail on $500,000 cash bond.
