Inside Business: Culpepper to appear at Moorhead Sam’s Club opening

MOORHEAD – Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper will greet fans and sign autographs from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the new Sam’s Club store here.

The warehouse store’s grand opening ceremony is scheduled for 8 a.m. Thursday. Local officials, including Mayor Del Rae Williams, city council members and chamber ambassadors will take part in a ribbon cutting. The Dilworth VFW Post 1225 will lead the posting of the colors.

Free health care screenings for the public will be given from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Other special events will be held inside the store, including food samples.

The store is at 2800 27th Ave. S., Moorhead.

Minn., N.D. rank high

on Opportunity Index

FARGO – Minnesota ranks second and North Dakota third in a list of states where you have the best chance of achieving the American dream.

The Opportunity Index, compiled by a Massachusetts group called Opportunity Nation, looks at 16 economic indicators. Some of the measures are traditional, like unemployment rate and median household income. Others are included to consider “social capital,” including the percentage of adults who volunteer.

Vermont tops the list. New Hampshire and Nebraska round out the top five.

The five states ranked as having the worst access to the American Dream are Alabama, Louisiana, New Mexico, Mississippi and Nevada.

Duluth-based Maurices opens 900th store

DULUTH, Minn. – Maurices, the women’s clothing chain that began with a store in downtown Duluth in 1931, reached a major milestone in March.

It opened its 900th store.

The store, in Fresno, Calif., is one of 60 new stores the national retailer, still based in Duluth, is opening in the United States and Canada during its fiscal year ending in July.

That will bring the total to 925 stores.

Maurices has opened more than 250 stores in the last five years with sales growing 65 percent, according to the company. The chain’s goal is to grow to more than 1,200 stores in the United States and 100 stores in Canada.
