Devils Lake man dies in single-vehicle crash on I-29BUXTON, N.D. – A Devils Lake man is dead after losing control of his minivan and hitting a concrete bridge pillar on Interstate 29 near Buxton Sunday night.
North Dakota Highway Patrol Sgt. Luke Hendrickson said Monte Allen Armentrout, 53, was heading to the Minneapolis area from his home in Devils Lake, N.D., shortly before 6:05 p.m. when Armentrout passed another vehicle near Buxton, then merged back into the right lane.
Hendrickson said Armentrout’s 1998 Ford Minivan then started to weave, then drifted across the left lane and headed the median.
It appeared that Armentrout tried to get his minivan under control without braking, but continued to fishtail back and forth in the median as it headed southbound.
As Armentrout approached the bridge pillar of exit 188 overhead, he turned to the right, Hendrickson said.
The van hit the center concrete pillar with the driver’s front door and front quarter panel.
Armentrout was transported to Altru in Hillsboro, but had suffered fatal injuries from the crash.
He had been wearing his seat belt at the time, Hendrickson said.
