Army Corps of Engineers closes Grand Forks office

GRAND FORKS - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed its Grand Forks office, which opened a few years after the devastating flood of 1997, the agency said Friday.

The Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, Minn., flood control project, built by the corps, was done in 2007 and the corps office has served its purpose, said Jim Peak, construction chief at the corps’ St. Paul District.

At its peak, the corps employed 37 in Grand Forks. But 15 years on, Peak said in a news release that the office “lacks sufficient projects to finance its long-term viability.”

In 2012, the corps opened an office in Fargo, which is also looking at a major flood control project.
