Truck's tall load damages I-94 bridge near Bismarck
Wilfred F. MacKenzie, 59, from Medicine Hat, Alberta, was driving the truck and given a permitted route of U.S. Highway 83 north of Bismarck to N.D. Highway 36 east of Wilton, authorities said.
The driver missed the Highway 36 turnoff and drove south to I-94 and then east on I-94.
The metal spools were too tall to safely pass under the 80th Street Northeast bridge over the interstate. The spools damaged the bridge structure before coming off the trailer and coming to rest in the median of the interstate, the patrol said. The incident was reported at 11:38 a.m. Wednesday.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation planned to close individual lanes of traffic on I-94 and 80th Street Northeast at the bridge area to cleanup and inspection. The driver was not hurt.
