NDSU's Monk falls in semifinals, earns All-American status

OKLAHOMA CITY – North Dakota State senior Steven Monk was upended in the 165-pound semifinals Friday at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

No. 1 seed David Taylor (33-0) of Penn State earned a 13-5 major decision against Monk in the semis.

The No. 4 seed Monk (34-2) is set to wrestle No. 11 seed Turtogto Luvsandork (38-7) of The Citadel today, with the winner advancing to the third-place match.

Monk earned All-American status earlier in the day on Friday, pinning Josh Veltre of Bloomsburg in the quarterfinals. Monk is the second Bison wrestler to earn All-American status in the Division I era.

NDSU junior Kurtis Julson upset No. 8 seed Timothy Dudley of Nebraska with a 3-2 decision Friday in the second round of the 184-pound consolation bracket. Julson (23-13) then lost 3-0 to Northern Iowa’s Ryan Loder in the consolation third round to end his season.
