NDSU’s Monk heads to the quarterfinals

OKLAHOMA CITY – North Dakota State senior Steven Monk advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Thursday at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

The No. 4 seed at 165 pounds, Monk won two matches Thursday, earning a 7-4 against Casey Kent of Penn in the first round. In the second round, Monk pinned No. 13 seed Daniel Yates of Michigan at 3:38.

Monk is set to face Josh Veltre of Bloomsburg today in the quarterfinals and the winner will be guaranteed All-America status.

NDSU’s Kurtis Julson also won in the evening session to stay alive after losing his first match. Julson won an 8-4 decision against Oklahoma State’s Nolan Boyd in the 184-pound wrestlebacks. Julson is set to face Tim Dudley of Nebraska today in the second round of wrestlebacks.

Bison wrestlers Evan Knutson (285) and Hayden Zillmer (174) both lost in wrestlebacks Thursday night to end their seasons. Both Knutson and Zillmer lost earlier in the day, too.
