Weekend Watch: Country star Jake Owen reaches for the ‘Gold’
The sun will have set when Owen plays Scheels Arena on Friday night, but his country/pop tunes will light up the room on the second date of his “Days of Gold Tour.”
The 32-year-old channels his shining outlook into his latest album, “Days of Gold,” and tunes like the title track, “Beachin’” and “Summer Jam,” the song he previously released with Florida Georgia Line.
Of course, he isn’t the first country artist to dip his toes in the surf. Kenny Chesney and Luke Bryan (who brought his pre-spring break party to the Fargodome three weeks ago) have both swapped cowboy boots for flip-flops.
Owen comes by his cloudless outlook naturally. The Vero Beach, Fla., native picked up a guitar only after a wakeboarding accident kept him off the links while he attended Florida State University.
He eventually relocated to Nashville, Tenn., and released his party anthem, “Yee Haw” and “Startin’ with Me” in 2006.
Two years later he broke out big with “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You” and then “Eight Second Ride.”
But it was 2011’s “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” that made him a star. The album’s title track and “Alone with You” both topped the country charts, and “The One that got Away” and “Anywhere with You” both cracked the top 10.
Expect those and more before Owen lets the sun set on the Scheels crowd.
Thomas Rhett and The Cadillac Three open the show.
