Letter: Mayville State possesses great basketball legacy

Nice note in The Forum about head coach Tim Miles, University of Nebraska, recently voted “Big 10 Coach of Year.”

But remember, not only North Dakota State University can claim him, since his first head coaching job was at Mayville State. He is the only college coach to take teams to national playoffs from NAIA (Mayville State), Division II (Southwest State, Marshall, Minn.) and Division I (Colorado State).

Also, Mayville can boast of Ben Jacobson, May-Port C-G, as head coach of Northern Iowa, and of course the great Lute Olson – who grew up in Mayville and played basketball at Mayville High School. He went on to become a College Hall of Fame coach at the University of Arizona. I had the honor of “shooting baskets” with him in my backyard as a young kid. What fun.
