Oak Grove holds on for a win over Sargent Central in ND Region 1 girls BB quarterfinals

WAHPETON, N.D. – Fargo Oak Grove had a comfortable lead at halftime, but before it could grab a victory it would have to weather several second-half rallies by Sargent Central.

The Grovers hung on for a 68-58 win during the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 girls basketball tournament Monday at Ed Werre Arena.

Sargent Central – the No. 2-seeded team from District 1 – started the third and fourth quarters on 6-0 and 7-0 runs respectively, but each time Oak Grove – No. 3 seed from District 2 – fended off the Cadets. Sargent Central – located in Forman – cut the Grovers’ lead to single digits seven times in the final 16 minutes.

“It seemed like when we would go on a nice run in the second half Sargent Central would come right back,” Fargo Oak Grove head coach Mike Forsberg said. “I was impressed with their resiliency and unimpressed with our defense at times in the second half.”

Oak Grove (16-7) advances to play No. 8-ranked Central Cass in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. today.

“We couldn’t seem to get over the hump,” Sargent Central head coach Julie Colemer said. “Julie Mlnarik getting into foul trouble didn’t help. We did a nice job of stopping their 3-point shooting in the second half, but we needed to do that in the first half.”

The Grovers were 7-for-10 from 3-point range in the first half with senior guard Rachel Osmundson connecting on five attempts from beyond the arc.

Osmundson finished with a game-high 21 points.

“We like to shoot from the perimeter,” Osmundson said. “When one of us is feeling it the whole team recognizes it and works hard to get that player the ball no matter who it is.”

Oak Grove was 8-for-15 from beyond the arc and got another three 3-pointers from Amber Muir.

“Those 3-pointers in the first half were huge because it gave us the nice cushion,” Forsberg said. “Without them, the second half is probably much different. The perimeter shooting also spread out their defense in the second half, which gave us some looks inside even though we didn’t always convert on them.”

Junior guard Hannah Schlecht, who scored her 1,000th career point in the District 1 tournament last week, paced the Cadets with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
