Century wins team title at ND state swim meet

GRAND FORKS – In last year’s North Dakota boys state swimming and diving meet, Bismarck Century finished first ahead of Minot and Fargo North.

In this year’s meet, which ended Saturday at the Hyslop Sports Center, the Patriots cruised to victory, leading throughout to finish with a team score of 349 – ahead of second place Minot (323) and third place Fargo North (297).

It was the same story as last year.

Loren Sether led Century, winning the 200 IM in addition to swimming legs on the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Sether, who broke the 200 IM record in Friday’s prelims with a time of 1 minute, 55.87 seconds, improved on that time on Saturday finishing in 1:54.58.

Minot received wins from Justin Kovich (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Ethan Bahl (100 breaststroke).

Fargo North brought home two state champions – Tanner Bjorlie in the 100 butterfly and Brady Coughlin in one-meter diving.

Coughlin, the defending diving champion, finished with a score 462.70, while Bjorlie touched-in at 52.13, five-tenths of a second ahead of Sether.

“I’m really proud of our team,” said Fargo North coach Dick Fisher. “We set three school records today, so I couldn’t ask of anything more from them.”

Fargo South, which finished fifth, won the 200 medley relay to go along with first place in the 200 freestyle by Alex Brock and in the 100 backstroke by Connor Bjellum.
