What is that ... building going up at Harwood Groves?
What is that?
As in, what is that new building going to be? What is inside that store? What is that happening in my neighborhood?
In this weekly feature, we seek to answer that question. We invite you to email your queries to us.
To kick off the feature, though, I had my own “What is that?” question to answer.
I drive past the south side of Touchmark at Harwood Groves each morning on the way to my day care provider’s house. Slowly I’ve noticed a building’s framework pop up east of University Drive on 35th Avenue South.
So what is that?
According to Kari Dick, executive director,
the construction site is the first of two sets of twin homes that will serve as independent living cottages.
The four new homes will be in addition to 23 cottages already on site. She said they’re available, either to rent or own, to seniors 55 and older.
Touchmark is a full-service retirement community with independent living in cottages and apartments, assisted living and two levels of memory care, Dick said. There are about 225 residents.
Dick said that in the past year or so, there has been an increased demand for the independent living option. Cottage residents don’t need to do their own maintenance, and can participate in center activities, such as its health and fitness club, meals and life enrichment events, she said.
“We’re starting to see a lot more seniors looking for other options. A lot of people are ready to let go of the house. They’re ready to let go of the shoveling and mowing, but they’re not ready to move into an apartment,” she said.
The first set of cottages should be completed early this summer, Dick said. The second would be completed by the end of summer.
