Davies takes down Fargo North at East Region boys basketball tournament

FARGO – The Fargo Davies boys basketball team entered Tuesday’s East Region quarterfinals as the top seed and played like it.

Davies posted a 100-51 victory over Fargo North at Davies High School.

Senior guards Andrew Kozlowski and Tanner Kretchman paced the No. 2-ranked Eagles with 27 and 25 points, respectively.

“You could not have drawn it up any better,” Fargo Davies head coach Bart Manson said. “We advance to the semifinals for a chance to get to the state tournament.”

Davies (18-2) plays fifth-seeded Fargo South at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Bison Sports Arena. The Bruins defeated Davies 79-68 in overtime on Jan. 11.

The Eagles jumped out early on the Spartans (6-15) and grabbed a 51-25 lead at halftime. Kretchman hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer before the half to give the all-state guard 23 points at the break.

It was a familiar scene for Davies, which entered the game averaging 85.6 points per game.

“You want to come out and set the tone in the opening game of a tournament and I thought we did that,” Manson said. “You don’t want to start by playing sloppy. We executed and I thought our passing was unbelievable. The guys made the extra pass, found the open man and knocked down shots.”

Erik Engel and Austin Schultz each added 11 points for Davies.

It was the fifth time this season that Davies had scored 100 or more points in a game.

Junior guard Willy Roman finished with nine points for the eighth-seeded Spartans. North plays fourth-seeded West Fargo at 3 p.m. Friday in a loser-out game.

Tuesday also marked the final time Davies’ group of seniors would play at home.

“It’s meant a lot for us to play here the last several years,” Kozlowski said. “We have become really good friends.”
