USPS seeking reduced hours in Red Lake Falls

RED LAKE FALLS, Minn. - The U.S. Postal Service will host a public meeting in Red Lake Falls on Thursday to discuss the proposed reduction of post office hours from eight to six hours per day.

The meeting will be at noon at City Hall. Red Lake Falls, with about 1,500 residents, is the county seat of Red Lake County in northwest Minnesota.

The Postal Service’s Post Plan is a cost-cutting process started in 2012 that includes consultation with local communities, according to Pete Nowacki, Postal Service spokesman in Minneapolis.

So far, 41 of 53 targeted post offices in northeastern North Dakota and 24 of 37 in northwest Minnesota have completed the process. Nationally, about two-thirds of the 13,000 post offices have completed the process.

While some adjustments may be made after the public meetings, the changes usually are implemented within a few weeks. Nationwide, the entire process is expected to be completed this fall, according to Nowacki.
