Report: Orioles close to deal with former Twins ace SantanaThe Baltimore Orioles are closing in on a minor league contract with two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, according to MLB.com.
Santana, 34, worked out for seven teams last week and was reportedly only hitting 77-78 mph on his fastball. He is shooting for a June return after multiple shoulder surgeries in recent years.
The left-hander went 11-9 with a 2.98 ERA with the New York Mets in 2010. After missing 2011 to recover from shoulder surgery, he pitched the first no-hitter in Mets history on May 1, 2012. However, he went just 6-9 with a 4.85 ERA. He last pitched in a major-league game on Aug. 17 of that year.
Last April, he had surgery to repair a re-tear of the anterior capsule muscle in his left shoulder.
Santana is 139-78 with a 3.20 ERA with 1,988 strikeouts and 567 walks in 2,025 2/3 innings over a 12-year career with the Minnesota Twins and Mets.
