Second half helps Perham beat Hawley

MOORHEAD – Hawley had Perham on the ropes at the beginning of the second half, but the Yellowjackets recovered in a big way.

Perham defeated the Nuggets 66-55 during the quarterfinals of the Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 boys basketball tournament Saturday at Memorial Auditorium.

A key timeout taken by Perham head coach Dave Cresap with 15 minutes, 21 seconds left in the second half proved vital.

Hawley had started the second half on an 8-0 run and was up 41-28. No more damage could be afforded for Perham if it wanted its hopes of playing in its fourth straight section title game to remain intact.

“When coach Cresap called that timeout, he told us we needed to play with heart,” Perham senior guard Tyler Glines said. “He told us to get the lead back and put pressure on them. We took it from there.”

Glines led the comeback, effort scoring 12 of his 19 points in the second half. He connected for three 3-pointers in the final 18 minutes – the third cutting the Nuggets’ lead to 49-47 with 6:42 left to play.

With 5:25 left, Perham tied the game 49-49 and took its first lead of the second half when senior guard Eli Beachy connected for a 3-pointer to make it 52-50 with 4:27 left.

“They kept chipping away and chipping away at their lead,” Cresap said. “A lot of our guys stepped up and hit some shots for us.”

Perham (20-7) advances to play Barnesville in the semifinals 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Auditorium.

Beachy added 19 points for the Yellowjackets.

“We hit a free throw to go up 50-49, but they dominated the last five minutes of the game,” Hawley head coach Jed Carlson said. “They made the plays down the stretch and were very balanced with their scoring, which kept us from keying in on one guy.”

Junior forward Ben Ellefson finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets (15-11).

Barnesville 102, Pelican Rapids 98

Just when Barnesville thought it was going to cruise to a Class 2A, Section 8 quarterfinals win over Heart O’ Lakes rival Pelican Rapids, the Vikings made sure the victory would be anything but easy.

The Trojans hung on for a 102-98 win, but the final six minutes were dramatic thanks to Pelican Rapids senior Ryan Bruggeman.

Bruggeman led all scorers pouring in 51 points – 34 coming in the second half – for the Vikings (18-8).

Barnesville led 41-30 at halftime and the lead ballooned to a 22-point advantage at one point in the second half.

“No lead is safe against a team that has Ryan Bruggeman,” Barnesville head coach Todd Henrickson said. “They never quit and we knew they wouldn’t. I would like to say I’m surprised, but I’m not.”

With 4:15 left to play, Pelican Rapids senior Nathan Sillerud connected for 3-pointer to cut the Trojans’ lead to 83-73. A minute later, the lead shrunk to 88-83 after Bruggeman hit a 3-pointer and stole the inbounds pass for an uncontested layup.

“I’m not surprised,” Barnesville senior guard Michael Strand said. “Ryan Bruggeman is a great player and we knew he’d lead his team back into the game. He did exactly that. … Scoring 51 points is unreal.”

Strand scored a team-high 27 points – 22 in the second half – for Barnesville (21-5). Junior guard Ben Sauve added 24 points for the Trojans.

“Even when they we remaking their run we kept attacking them,” Henrickson said. “They didn’t give up.”
