Moorhead goes 1-5 at state wrestling tournament

ST. PAUL – Only 24 hours previously, the Moorhead wrestling squad was celebrating a fifth-place team finish on the mats at the Xcel Energy Center. Thursday was the Spuds’ day. Friday was not.

“I think it was obviously a good season because we achieved our goal of getting fifth place,” said Moorhead senior 132-pounder Kenny Mark, who was the lone Spuds wrestler to make it to the quarterfinals. “Obviously, losing is never fun. Wish I could have had more people with me.”

Moorhead had four wrestlers qualify individually for the Class 3A state tournament. The Spuds went 1-5.

“In the state tournament, you control your own destiny,” Moorhead coach Skip Toops said. “If you want to guarantee you’re going to wrestle again, you have to win your first match.”

Losses by Samuel Grove and Joseph Grove summed up the day for Moorhead. Joseph Grove was up 8-0 before being pinned with 32 seconds remaining at 160 pounds. Samuel Grove came in ranked sixth at 170, but lost a 5-2 decision in the first round. The two lost on mats beside one another.

Grant Brendemuhl fell 7-5 at 106 pounds and, since none of the wrestlers they lost to went on to win in the quarterfinals, the days were done for three of the four Spuds wrestlers.

Ranked eighth at 132, Mark won his opening match 3-1, but fell 15-4 in the quarterfinals and in the first round of wrestlebacks 3-1.

Border West, Verndale wrestlers stay perfect

Most people take things one game or one match at a time. Border West 120-pounder Cameron Sykora isn’t like most people.

“I don’t try to think about it too much,” Sykora said. “One title at a time.”

What Sykora doesn’t think about is entering the history books for high school wrestling in Minnesota.

The three-time state champ punched his ticket to the semifinals at 120 pounds in Class 1A on Friday. Sykora is trying to become just the 18th wrestler in Minnesota high school wrestling history to win four state titles. Ranked No. 1, Sykora moved to 33-0, trying to make it back-to-back perfect seasons.

Verndale’s Dillon Card lost in the quarterfinals the last two seasons at the state wrestling tournament. Friday, he moved to 43-0 overall and will enter Day 2 in the championship bracket for the first time.

“I’ve never made it out of the quarters, so this was huge for me,” said Card, ranked No. 2 in Class 1A at 220 pounds. “You just have to go out there and do what you know how to do. There’s no time for thinking at the state tournament.”

Detroit Lakes looking for first state champ

Detroit Lakes has never had an individual state champion. The Lakers have three chances today with three wrestlers in the Class 2A semifinals. Braydon Ortloff (106 pounds), Parker Jackson (152) and James Huwe (285) will try to be the first Lakers state champion.
