AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS: Olivia Johnson, a sixth-grader at Sullivan Middle School, was the winner of the Cass County Spelling Bee held recently at Northern Cass School in Hunter, N.D. Second place went to Jacob Shelver, a student at Ben Franklin Junior High School in Fargo. Johnson and Shelver will now represent Cass County at the State Spelling Bee March 21 in Bismarck.
CHEERS TO THE VOLUNTEERS: U.S. Sens. Heidi Heitkamp and John Hoeven and Rep. Kevin Cramer have recognized Heidi Deplazes as one of two North Dakota students receiving the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for her volunteer work. She will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and a trip to Washington in May to join other honorees from across the nation for four days of events, tours and national recognition events. Deplazes, a sixth-grader at Sullivan Middle School in Fargo, organized a one-night event to collect books and toys for a local homeless shelter and raised money to build a shed for the facility and remodel the playground and family room. Her efforts raised more than $3,000 and two truckloads of toys, books and bikes for children at the homeless shelter.
INTERNS AND CLERKS: Pedigree Technologies of Fargo has hired Brian Gallagher as a marketing analyst intern. Gallagher is pursuing a master’s degree in agribusiness and applied economics at North Dakota State University.
MILITARY NEWS: Air National Guard Airmen 1st Class Hunter S. Evanson and Erik T. Hest have graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. Evanson is the son of Kelly Evanson of Walcott, N.D., and a 2013 graduate of Richland 44 High School, Colfax, N.D. Hest is the son of Russell and Joyce Hest of Moorhead. He is a 2005 graduate of Moorhead High School and 2010 graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead.
