Willow River prison escapee capturedWILLOW RIVER, Minn. - A prisoner who escaped from a Willow River prison Tuesday evening has been apprehended, the Minnesota Department of Corrections announced Wednesday.
Richard James O’Reilly, 50, was taken into custody without incident at a Sturgeon Lake-area residence around noon Wednesday by authorities from the Pine County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Corrections Fugitive Unit and Minnesota State Patrol.
O’Reilly walked away from the Challenge Incarceration Program at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, prompting a search by local law enforcement and DOC agents.
O’Reilly has been incarcerated at the prison since November, serving a sentence on a counterfeiting conviction.
The Willow River facility houses nonviolent offenders. DOC officials said O’Reilly is in “Phase 1” of the program, which is described as a “highly structured and intensive boot camp.”
