Enderlin holds on to top Sargent Central in Region 1 boys BB quarterfinals

FARGO – Enderlin saw a double-digit halftime lead melt away in the second half on Monday.

Worse yet, the Eagles found themselves trailing in the fourth quarter, but a sizable run with four minutes left to play helped Enderlin avoid an early exit from the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 boys basketball tournament.

Enderlin – the No. 3-seed from District 2 – defeated Sargent Central 81-67 during the quarterfinals at the Fargo Civic Center.

In the final four minutes, 12 seconds of the game, the Eagles (16-7) rattled off a 16-2 run fueled by senior guard Daniel Lindgren.

“We couldn’t seem to get any stops on defense for a while,” said Lindgren, who finished with a game-high 28 points. “We had to keep our composure, which was tough and we finally caught on there at the end.”

Enderlin plays Oakes in the semifinals at approximately 8 p.m. today.

Sargent Central (7-16) trailed 42-31 at halftime, but clawed back. The Cadets took their first lead of the second half with just over six minutes left to play, but it was short lived as Enderlin sophomore Graham Hurlburt restored the Eagles lead with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession.

After that, the best the Cadets would do was tie the game several times.

“I thought we needed to move the ball around a little better than we did,” Sargent Central head coach Rod Kramer said. “We seemed to be looking around waiting for something to happen instead of playing the way that led us (to that part of the game).”

Lindgren scored eight points in the Eagles’ decisive run.

“We were in control most of the game, but then all of sudden with six minutes left in the fourth quarter we are down,” Enderlin head coach Calvin Kraft said. “They made some tough shots. Finally, we handled their pressure better with about four minutes left. Making shots did help, but our resiliency and poise came through at the end of the game.”

Enderlin shot 61 percent (19 of 31) from the field in the first half.

Brandon Wyum finished with 25 points and eight rebounds for the Cadets.

Hurlburt collected a double-double for the Eagles scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
