Oak Grove tops Lidgerwood-Wyndmere in quarterfinals of Region 1 boys BB tourney
The Grovers cruised to a 75-45 victory over Lidgerwood-Wyndmere during the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 boys basketball tournament on Monday at the Fargo Civic Center.
At 6 p.m. today, No. 2-ranked Oak Grove (21-2) meets No. 3-ranked Milnor – the defending state champion – in the semifinals.
Oak Grove defeated the then
top-ranked and undefeated Bison 73-72 in Milnor last month, but a rematch between the two powerhouses in the region championship game remained a possibility.
Even though they won’t be meeting in the title game like last year, the anticipation for today’s semifinal game is still apparent.
“It is going to be an exciting atmosphere and it’s probably going to come right down to the wire again,” said Oak Grove junior Carter Kretchman, who hit the game-winning shot in the Jan. 28 game against the Bison. “We’ll have to see what happens.”
“We knocked them off earlier in the year, but that was a one-point game that could have easily gone either way,” Oak Grove head coach Kyle Card added. “I told the boys to enjoy it because it should be a packed house.”
Kretchman poured in 22 points for the Grovers on Monday.
Oak Grove senior forward Nick Card collected a double-double finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
“We know (Briton) Bussman and (Wyatt) Mund are their studs and we’ll have to make sure we know where those two are at all times,” Nick Card said referring to Milnor’s standout combo. “It all comes down to one game now and hopefully we take it.”
The Grovers and Warbirds were tied 9-9 after the first quarter, but Oak Grove pulled away in the second quarter taking a 30-19 lead at halftime.
“We stepped it up defensively in the second quarter after coming out a little flat,” Kyle Card said. “We knocked down a few baskets and got a couple easy ones off of turnovers.”
Christian Adams added 15 points for the Grovers.
The Warbirds (11-12) pulled to within 10 points of Oak Grove several times in the third quarter, but never cut the lead to single digits in the second half.
“We wanted to start the second half a lot better than we did,” Lidgerwood-Wyndmere head coach Todd Hosford said. “We wanted to get to within single digits by the end of the third quarter and when we didn’t, it sort of snowballed from there. They hit some open shots and we turned the ball over way too many times.”
Lance Haase and Seth Harles each scored 11 points for the Warbirds.
