Letter: What’s lost to the flashy news?

It is exciting to see that Sanford Health is moving forward in new ways, such as the new Imagenetics program started by a $125 million donation by Denny Sanford. However, as an employee at Sanford Health, I was appalled to learn that my health plan doesn’t cover more than three dietitian visits per year in the eating disorder outpatient program, and it doesn’t cover inpatient eating disorder unit care at all.

Considering Sanford provides these services to the general public, it seems confusing that its own employees don’t have access. Given that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses, one can’t help but wonder what other areas of basic medical care are being ignored or not improved upon in the Sanford Health System in favor of more flashy “news worthy” projects.
