Cass commission will likely wait to decide Berndt's fate until court case is resolved

FARGO – For the Cass County Commission, the question of what to do about criminal charges against the county administrator will likely wait until the matter is resolved in court, the commission chairman said Thursday.

County Administrator Keith Berndt, 53, faces two misdemeanor charges of fifth-degree domestic assault. Berndt’s attorney, Lisa Borgen, has said he denies the allegations and plans to plead not guilty.

The charges filed earlier this month in Clay County District Court allege that Berndt physically assaulted a minor at Berndt’s home the night of the Super Bowl.

Ken Pawluk, chairman of the Cass County Commission, said the commissioners are awaiting the outcome of the Moorhead Police Department’s investigation and the court case before taking disciplinary action, if any.

Berndt, who remained on the job Thursday, has an initial court hearing set for March 25.
