Bismarck defeats Mandan in ND state girls hockey quarterfinalsGRAND FORKS – Bismarck is headed back to the North Dakota girls hockey state semifinals.
The top-seeded Blizzard cruised to a 7-0 win over eighth-seeded Mandan on Thursday during the quarterfinals of the state tournament at Olympic Arena.
Kennedy Hageness scored three goals to lead the Blizzard (22-1-1).
“We wanted to come out fast and not let up,” said Hageness, who also assisted on another Bismarck goal.
Bismarck – the defending state champions – jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period, getting goals from Hageness, Britta Curl and Sage Barta. Barta’s goal came on the power play.
“I think we caught them a little off guard in the first period,” Hageness said.
Barta scored her second goal of the game 58 seconds into the second period.
Bismarck advances to play the winner of the Grand Forks-Williston game at noon today at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Sophomore goaltender Kennedy Blair stopped nine shots for the Blizzard and recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
Chelsey Norton stopped 23 shots in net for the Braves (8-14-0).
