Krahn is latest Packers shooting star
When Krahn shoots, good things usually follow for the Packers, and this season has been no different.
West Fargo (17-5-1) is seeded No. 2 for the North Dakota girls hockey state tournament. The Packers play No. 7-seeded Fargo North at 5 p.m. today at Olympic Arena during the quarterfinals.
Krahn is the senior anchor on West Fargo’s top line, scoring 25 goals and adding 23 assists this season.
“The players I skate with have made me a better player,” Krahn said. “Also, playing with Hayley Walsh last season helped me get ready for this season.”
Krahn had her best statistical season as a junior, finishing with 67 points last season. She tied Walsh for the state lead in goals scored with 44.
Walsh graduated last spring, leaving the Packers to revamp their lines. West Fargo still has been an offensively geared team, with four players among the state’s top 10 scoring leaders, including freshman forward Janey Sandoval, who leads the state with 60 points.
“I think they all make each other better,” West Fargo head coach Pat Johnson said. “Together they succeed by moving the puck around.”
There have been hot and cold stretches for Krahn this season. When Krahn misses her mark, she sometimes needs encouragement to keep taking the green light in the offensive zone.
“She has played well this season, but the biggest thing with her is to keep shooting,” Johnson said. “She has a gift of a great shot, so she may as well use it.”
Krahn has collected 107 goals and 72 assists in her career. Teams know she is a threat to score and game plan accordingly.
“There is a little pressure, but I play it like any other player on the ice,” Krahn said. “I do get down on myself sometimes, but Coach Johnson always tells me to keep shooting and go hard.”
Krahn is undecided if she’ll play hockey in college, but has received interest from several schools, including Augsburg College.
The Packers are making their seventh straight trip to the state tournament. Last season, West Fargo fell to Bismarck in the state championship game.
West Fargo holds a 2-0 edge over the Spartans this season. Both contests were shutouts.
