Jossart, Cobbers cruise past St. Benedict

MOORHEAD – A trio of Concordia seniors reached 80 wins Wednesday night.

Senior Erika Jossart scored 14 of her team-high 16 points in the second half to spark the Cobbers to a 70-56 victory against St. Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball at Memorial Auditorium on senior night.

Jossart and fellow seniors Alexandra Lippert and Kelsey Walloch have been part of 80 victories since they entered the program, winning 75 percent (80-27) of those games.

“I think it’s a testament to our program at Concordia,” said Jossart, who had a team-high five assists against the Blazers.

The Cobbers (20-4, 18-3) have won six in a row and 14 of their past 15 games. They can clinch the No. 2 seed for the MIAC tournament Saturday with a victory at Hamline. Concordia has won 20 games in three of its past four seasons.

“It says a lot about the teammates that they have played alongside with and how they’ve grown and matured into great leaders,” Cobbers head coach Jessica Rahman said of her three seniors.

Jossart, Lippert and Walloch were recognized, along with their parents, prior to the game. Rahman tried to contain her emotion as she read a poem for her seniors, who were playing in their last regular-season home game.

“It’s always emotional on senior night,” Jossart said. “Knowing that your career is coming to an end always makes it tough.”

Jossart gave the Cobbers an edge in the second half.

St. Benedict cut the Concordia lead to 32-28 after junior Elena Koch drained a 15-foot jump shot with 18 minutes, 2 seconds to play in the second half. About 30 seconds later, Jossart swished her first of four second-half 3-pointers. The 5-foot-7 point guard shot 67 percent (4 of 6) from 3-point range in the second half.

Jossart’s final 3-pointer gave the Cobbers a 65-44 lead with 4:32 remaining.

“She’s one of those kids who is definitely fiery on the floor and very feisty,” Rahman said. “When she gets going and the fist-pumps happen, then you know she’s really getting after things and it fires up the rest of the team.”

The 16 points tied a season-high for Jossart, who was averaging 6.3 points per game entering Wednesday.

“Not only did she score, she got us really organized offensively,” Rahman said. “I thought she did a really great job playing point guard tonight.”

Wallach added 12 points and led the Cobbers with eight rebounds. Lippert had four points, four rebounds and three blocked shots.

“When things got kind of tough, we saw some great possessions where those seniors led us through some stuff,” Rahman said.
