Letter: Very poor policy at West Acres

As I walked up to the customer “service” desk at West Acres on Saturday (Feb. 15) with my granddaughter, planning to buy her earrings as a special treat, and asked if there was a scooter I could use, I was shocked at the response I got from the woman. I’d need to pay $5 to use a scooter.

I planned to borrow an electric scooter to help me do my shopping. I am one of many disabled shoppers, and when I shop at Hornbacher’s, Lowe’s or any number of businesses around town, I use a store’s complimentary electric scooters. I commented, “that was a deposit, right?” The response was, no, that was the charge to use it. My surprised response was to ask why the mall actually charges handicapped shoppers to shop there?

Imagine a store charging a handicapped customer extra to buy their goods. It’s a very short-sighted policy. If they are asking these customers to pay a surcharge to shop there, does it not occur to them we then have less money to spend? Even my 8-year-old companion gets it, asking, “Grandpa, why do they ask you to pay money to come in here?” Unfortunately, I had no answer.

I refused the cart and just took longer to do my shopping. West Acres needs to get it, too.
