Fergus Falls eliminated in girls hockey section finalST. CLOUD, Minn. – Rachel Drew scored two second-period goals to lift Alexandria to a 4-1 win over Fergus Falls and its second consecutive Minnesota Class 1A, Section 6 girls hockey championship.
“It felt great,” Drew said. “You always dream about being the hero, or scoring the big goal.”
Abby Hobbs scored Fergus Falls’ only goal in the first period to give the Otters a 1-0 lead. Drew scored to tie the game 1-1.
That’s when the Cardinals offense began to roll. Sam Klimek gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game at 13:28, and then Drew scored her second goal at 16:06 of the second period.
Mari Wosepka added an insurance goal at 4:30 of the third period to give Alexandria its 4-1 lead.
Fergus Falls head coach Matt Koalska said he could feel the momentum shift once Alexandria put in its first goal.
“It’s always nice in a section final game or a playoff game to score first, and we were able to do that,” Koalska said. “We just tried to play our pace or play our game. When Alex got their first one, they seemed to pick it up a little bit.”
The state tournament begins on Feb. 19 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
