Letter: Blue Key owns Nickel TrophyMissing in the Feb. 8 story about the security of the Nickel Trophy is any mention of its origins and traditions. It was established by the North Dakota State University and University of North Dakota Blue Key chapters. The chapter from the university that most recently won the NDSU-UND football game was custodian of the trophy, although the athletic departments began helping with security when trying to swipe it became an off-season sport.
In the ’50s, the trophy was paraded in the home team stadium at half time, usually in a convertible flanked by Blue Key members. Off-season, the trophy was on display in a showcase at the NDSU Student Union when NDSU’s Blue Key chapter had possession or under lock and key in the old Fieldhouse when not on display. I’m not sure what UND did, but I think it was usually in a locked display cabinet in their Fieldhouse.
The recent Forum story leaves the impression that the athletic departments “own” the trophy. Not true. Perhaps the Blue Key chapters no longer know the trophy is “theirs”?
Schwarz was NDSU Blue Key president, 1956-57.
