Sprinklers required for large homes in Minn.

ST. PAUL - New large Minnesota homes will be required to have fire sprinklers.

Administrative Law Judge Eric Lipman approved the provision that requires automatic fire-sprinkler systems in new single-family homes more than 4,500 square feet. Existing homes are not affected.

Just 15 percent of new Twin Cities homes are that size, with a smaller percentage in most of the rest of the state.

Legislators have debated for years whether to require sprinklers in all new homes, but that proposal has not become law.
