Grand Forks Red River tops South-Shanley in East Region boys hockey quarterfinalsFARGO – Ending the second period on the penalty kill was not the ideal position for Grand Forks Red River, but the Roughriders caught a break Tuesday.
Senior forward Jonah Kratochvil scored a short-handed goal with under a minute left in the period. The goal jumpstarted No. 5-seeded Red River to a 5-1 win over No. 4 Fargo South-Shanley during the quarterfinals of the East Region boys hockey tournament at Scheels Arena.
“I saw their goalie mishandled the puck a little bit and read it,” said Kratochvil, who finished with two goals and two assists. “I anticipated it would make a lucky bounce. I snuck behind their defense and made a move to the inside. I shot the puck between his legs and fortunately it snuck through.”
Kratochvil’s goal broke a 1-1 tie and foreshadowed a dominant third period for the Roughriders (13-8-1).
“That goal was huge,” Red River head coach Bill Chase said. “We haven’t had one of those in a while and it was what we needed. It got us pumped.”
Red River advances to play the winner of top-seeded Grand Forks Central and No. 8 Devils Lake 6 p.m. Friday at Grand Forks Purpur Arena. South-Shanley (11-10-1) plays the loser of Central-Devils Lake in a consolation game at noon Friday at Purpur.
“After they got that short-handed goal they really got going,” South-Shanley coach Wade Storey said. “They had all the momentum and we started pressing. That led to some bad things and they got some easy ones at the end.”
Red River outshot the Bruins 16-6 in the third period scoring three goals – two coming from junior forward Logan Montgomery, who finished the game with a hat trick.
“Scoring three goals is such a bonus, but getting this win is even bigger,” Montgomery said.
Senior forward Andrew Blumer scored the Bruins’ lone goal.
