Letter: Grateful for voice against bullying

I was impressed with the thought-provoking and persuasive letter written by Jaida Downs in the Feb. 2 Forum. Downs expressed concern regarding the rapid spread of bullying and the negative, long-range effects, especially among our youth.

As an adult, a parent, grandparent and former teacher, I can’t help but admire the author’s words of concern and foresight. This wakeup call for everyone needs to be heeded.

In my youth, personality conflicts arose often in the schoolyard and in neighborhoods, usually with face-to- face and one-on-one conflicts.

But today’s technology allows faceless harassment to demean and abuse minds, crush souls and spirits. Adult supervision is a must. What are our children doing with their cellphones?

I am grateful to Downs for voicing a concern and giving us an honest observation showing a compassionate plea for us to halt on- and off-line abuse. Most victims are young and easily bruised. Help stop bullying when you can. Like Downs said, “It’s not right.”
