Louisiana man killed in four-vehicle accident near New TownNEW TOWN, N.D. -- A Louisiana man was killed Saturday in a four-vehicle accident about 10 miles west of New Town.
Haun Son, 31, of New Iberia, La., was driving a pickup east on Highway 23 about 7:45 a.m. when he tried to pass a semi truck driven by Timothy Sallee, 56, of Machesney Park, Ill., at the crest of a hill, the North Dakota Highway Patrol reported. The highway has two lanes.
Christopher Beach, 53, of Carrington, who was driving west in a semi, saw Son when he and Sallee peaked over the hill. Beach tried to apply the brakes and avoid the oncoming vehicles but had no time to react, the patrol said. Son hit Beach’s vehicle head-on, then struck Sallee’s semi on the driver’s side.
Son’s vehicle spun on the road, hitting a pickup driven by Edvin Leon, 39, of Euharlee, Ga., before coming to a rest in the ditch.
Son was pronounced dead at the scene. Beach, Sallee and Leon were uninjured. All drivers were wearing seatbelts.
The collision closed the road for about seven hours, officials said. The accident remains under investigation.
