Weekend Watch: Guitarist, Fargo native Curfman returns to headline Winter Blues Fest

FARGO - This Saturday, Shannon Curfman has her second homecoming show in a year. The stage is smaller than her last local appearance, but the spotlight will be all on her.

The Fargo native shared the stage at Fargodome last March with Kid Rock, who she tours with as a member of his band, Twisted Brown Truckers.

Saturday she headlines the Fargo Winter Blues Festival at the Doublewood Inn. While she plays gritty rock with Kid, the guitarist takes a bluesier side on her solo work.

Fargo fans will welcome the return to her roots.

Curfman started turning heads as a 7-year-old playing guitar at public school talent shows here. She graduated to playing the bar scene, moved down to Minneapolis with her family and by 14 had released her debut disc, “Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions.”

She formed her own label, Purdy Records, and released three more discs. Her latest, 2010’s “What You’re Getting Into,” features a duet with Joe Bonamassa, covering Eric Clapton’s “The Core.”

The disc also includes a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well” and Queen’s “Dragon Attack,” showing Curfman isn’t turning her back on rock ’n roll.

Saturday’s lineup features the local debut of Shawn Holt & The Teardrops. Holt picks up the guitar after his father, Chicago bluesman Morris “Magic Slim” Holt died last February.

Also appearing is fellow Chicago musician Maurice John Vaughn and an acoustic set from Fargo’s Blue Wailers opening the day at 4 p.m.

A post-fest jam in the Doublewood Lounge features Maurice John Vaughn, Troy Anderson and more starts at 9:30.
