Jacobson, Shanley down Davies in girls hoops

FARGO – Offense certainly played a big role, but defense served as the spark for Fargo Shanley on Tuesday.

The Deacons clamped down and posted a 65-52 Eastern Dakota Conference girls basketball victory over Fargo Davies at Davies High School.

“We came out fired up on defense,” Shanley sophomore guard Sarah Jacobson said. “We pushed and were quick to the ball. Our defense turned into easier baskets on offense.”

The North Dakota Class A, No. 4-ranked Deacons forced the Eagles into a lot of attempts with the shot clock winding down. Davies – ranked No. 5 – was called for two shot-clock violations during the game.

“They kept us a little off balance, but I think we were not as aggressive as we would have liked to have been on offense,” Davies head coach Tonah Safranski said. “When we were getting the ball inside to Katelyn (Olson) we were doing OK, but we settled for some shots at times.”

Shanley (11-2, 9-2 EDC) led 37-24 at halftime.

“Our defense was there for us the whole game and helped us keep going until we got into a groove offensively,” Shanley junior forward Alivia Fraase said.

Jacobson led all scorers with 25 points and connected for four

3-pointers in the game.

Fraase added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Deacons.

Shanley began the second half on an 11-2 run extending its lead to 22 points.

Perimeter shooting kept the Eagles (9-4, 8-5) close with the Deacons early in the first half. Four different players hit 3-pointers for Davies in the first half, but it was Olson’s work in the paint that was the most consistent source of offense.

Olson finished with a team-high 20 points and posted seven rebounds. Alexis Klabo added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.
