No. 5-ranked Fargo Oak Grove scores District 2 boys hoops win over Northern Cass

FARGO – There was no letdown for Fargo Oak Grove on Friday night.

The North Dakota Class B, No. 5-ranked Grovers – just three days removed from a thrilling road win against No. 1 Milnor – posted a 79-54 District 2 boys basketball victory over Northern Cass at Gorder Gymnasium.

With the win, Oak Grove clinches the No. 1 seed for the District 2 tournament, which is set for Feb. 14-17 at the Fargo Civic Center.

“We knew if we won this game, we would get the No. 1 seed for the district tournament, and that was one of our goals as a team this year,” Oak Grove head coach Kyle Card said. “Northern Cass came out strong, but we really got rolling in the second quarter.”

Perimeter shooting fueled Oak Grove (15-1, 6-0 District 2) against the Jaguars (11-4, 4-2).

The Grovers connected for nine 3-pointers in the game – seven coming in the second quarter alone.

Three of the seven second-quarter 3-pointers came from 6-foot-3 forward Isaac Olson, who finished with 10 points.

“Our ball movement was great that quarter,” Olson said. “We were swinging the ball around, and the 3-pointers really got the energy up. It really helped us pull ahead.

Oak Grove was up 16-15 after the first quarter, but the Jaguars grabbed a lead early in the second quarter when junior Hunter Ward connected for a 3-pointer.

Unfortunately for the Jaguars, more success from beyond the arc did not follow.

The Grovers ended up outscoring Northern Cass 27-11 in the second quarter and took a 43-26 lead at halftime.

“Our transition defense wasn’t there for us,” Northern Cass head coach Ryan Lyson said. “I thought it was going to be a close game that would go right down to the wire after what happened in the first quarter. They hit seven 3-pointers in the second quarter, and it is very hard to come back from that.”

Senior Michael Goodman finished with a team-high 12 points for the Jaguars.

Oak Grove junior guard Carter Kretchman scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Grovers.

Oak Grove has now won eight consecutive games and is likely to climb in the Class B poll when it is released Monday.

“It is fun to see us playing so well,” Olson said. “The win against Milnor was a great statement game for us, and this win against Northern Cass was a big one for districts.”
