Forum editorial: Barnes deputies win spurgeLEAFY SPURGE: To the Barnes County (N.D.) Sheriff’s Department for dilly-dallying over what clearly was a developing case of severe animal abuse and neglect on a farm near Kathryn, N.D. First hints of trouble came as early as last August. Sheriff’s deputies were advised by neighbors several times from August through December that something was amiss at the Ginger and Karl Helland place. Yet, the only official action were a couple of misdemeanor charges for livestock running at large. Court documents suggest the situation was far worse regarding condition of livestock, but deputies did not take the initiative to check the Hellands’ place. It took yet another neighbor, who saw escaped livestock was in very poor shape, to alert deputies. That was late in December when the damage had been done. A friendly visit to the farm by sheriff’s deputies weeks before could have prevented the situation from going from bad to worse.
PRAIRIE ROSES: To New York City real estate magnate Donald Trump, he of the peculiar hair and silly television shows, who said last week he is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. As unlikely as it is that the outspoken Trump can secure the nomination, his presence in the race would be, if nothing else, wonderfully entertaining. Never one to carefully choose his words, Trump would assuredly insert foot in mouth regularly during the primary season, thus providing great fodder for pundits and political cartoonists. So, The Donald should go for it. It’s always fun to have a self-funding showman of gigantic ego in a political race.
