Mini brats no substitute for cocktail wienie
Perhaps my mistake was serving these bite-size sausages to a room of women, but Man Cave’s latest creation won’t be replacing a more traditional cocktail wienie anytime soon.
The problem with this snack, which comes in flavors like bacon cheeseburger and breakfast, seems to start with the size. It seems they just took a regular brat and made it shorter, so the result is a strange sphere that is too big to be bite-sized and too greasy to easily cut.
The taste was about what you’d expect: brat-like. But I questioned how to serve them, as there were no cooking or serving directions on the packaging.
I tried serving the bacon cheeseburger flavor like I would cocktail wienies. I slathered them in buffalo sauce and set them to simmer in a small crockpot.
I fried the mini breakfast brats as I would any other early-morning sausage.
My taste-testers – male and female – all got stuck on the meatball-like shape and natural casing, but agreed they were pretty tasty.
A 12-ounce package sells for about $6.50 and can be found Hornbacher’s locations, which seems quite expensive when you compare them to the other full-size brat selections.
Bottom line: While Man Cave mini brats haven’t quite “revolutionized” the cocktail wienie, as one company representative claimed, they might create a mini riot of conversation for their novelty.
