Video: Moorhead estate sale offers antiques from Red Wing mansion
A number of pieces from the Sheldon mansion will be sold Thursday through Saturday at the home of the late Paul Berglund, 417 9th St. S., Moorhead. Some of Berglund’s estate will also be sold.
The pieces, some dating back to the Victorian era, are from Robert J. Roberts of Moorhead, whose ancestors bought the Sheldon house in 1909.
“We really haven’t had this much old stuff in one sale,” says Chuck Marx of Marx Estate and House Sales, which conducts the event.
Marx pointed out some of the classical designs – such as a walnut Eastlake hall tree, a mirror mounted on a marble-top table – intended to greet visitors to a home, with built-in carriers to store umbrellas and canes for $995.
Next to that stands an elaborate walnut roll-top secretary for $1,195.
An early 20th-century cherry wood living room set with carved ribbon motif on the arms sits nearby. The two chairs, one a rocker, the other on wheels, are $165, and the couch is $495.
Around the corner in the dining room, a corner hutch holds a number of glass and Waterford crystal pieces.
The showpiece, however, is a large walnut Victorian bed and dressing table set for $1,995. Both pieces feature walnut burl accents and the table tops are marble slabs.
The pieces came to Moorhead with Eileen Eichinger Roberts, whose grandparents bought the Sheldon home in 1909, explained her daughter, Eileen Roberts of Edina.
“Family lore is that the purchase price for everything was $5,000,” Roberts told the Red Wing Republican Eagle.
The Sheldon home is part of the National Registry of Historic Places.
Eichinger Roberts and her husband, Bob, pulled the antiques out of storage when they moved into a big enough house in 1968, Eileen Roberts explained.
Eichinger Roberts died in 2012, and the pieces in this sale were left to her son, Robert Roberts, who still lives in Moorhead.
“It needs to find a home where somebody will love it,” Eileen Roberts says.
There will be a preview of the sale from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today
The sale opens at 10 a.m. Thursday, with numbers being handed out starting at 9:30 a.m.
