Schock last second free throws spark Packers' win

FARGO – With the game clock showing five seconds remaining, West Fargo senior forward Travis Schock took matters into his own hands.

Schock’s Packers were trailing by one point when he took an inbounds pass and drove coast to coast to draw a two-shot foul.

The 6-foot-3 swingman made two free throws with seven-tenths of a second left to help North Dakota Class A, No. 5-ranked West Fargo to a 65-64 Eastern Dakota Conference boys basketball victory over Fargo Shanley on Tuesday at McCormick Gymnasium.

“I was going for whatever I could get,” Schock said of his drive. “With five seconds left, you can’t be too picky. I tried to get to the hoop and hoped for a foul.”

Schock finished with 12 points for the Packers (6-3, 7-1 EDC).

“I felt confident going to the line and knew I could make at least one,” Schock added. “The first one didn’t look good out of my hand, but luckily it went in and the second felt much better.”

Prior to Schock’s free throws, Shanley junior forward Garang Garang put the Deacons up 64-63 by converting a putback layup with five seconds.

Garang’s shot answered a 15-foot jumper by West Fargo junior Brady Heisler with 19.2 seconds remaining.

Before Heisler’s shot, the last time West Fargo had led in the second half was with 11:39 remaining.

“I knew we could stick it out,” Heisler said. “We have all season. We trusted in ourselves and our coaches to get the win.”

West Fargo led by as many as 16 points in the game, when it jumped out to an 18-2 lead. The Deacons battled back and trailed 32-25 at halftime.

“Right away, I questioned our effort and concentration,” Shanley head coach Shane Alderman said. “We switched to a zone defense after falling behind, and that limited their second chances on offense. It also slowed them down and stopped them from getting to the basket.”

Shanley (2-6, 2-5 EDC) made its run in the second half.

Senior forward Chase Montplaisir and junior guard Matt Wolbaum combined to hit 3-pointers in three consecutive possessions to give the Deacons their first lead.

Junior guard Tre Fort finished with 15 points for the Deacons.

Six-foot-4 junior center Ben Holland posted 16 points for the Packers, and junior Melvin Collins added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
