Former Browns Valley mayor decides to run for seat in state House

BROWNS VALLEY, Minn. – The former Browns Valley mayor announced this week he plans to run for the state House of Representatives.

Republican Jeff Backer will seek the District 12A state representative seat currently held by Jay McNamar of Elbow Lake.

House District 12A is comprised of Big Stone, Grant, Stevens, Traverse and Wilkin counties and the western half of Douglas and Pope counties.

In a statement, Backer said he believes first-term Democrat McNamar of Elbow Lake has ignored Greater Minnesota families, seniors, farmers, small-business owners, students and schools, and that change in the region’s representation is needed.

Backer has 14 years of local government and school board experience. He is a member of the Minnesota Board of Police Officers Standards and Training; volunteer ambulance EMT; member of the Lions Club and as an active volunteer in his church.

Backer said he is pro-life, pro-family and supports Second Amendment initiatives.

Backer has been married for 20 years and has one daughter, a junior in high school.

Browns Valley is a city of about 600 in Traverse County, about 90 miles south of Moorhead.
