Hawley beats Kindred at Oak Grove Shootout

FARGO – Hawley switched things up on defense during the second quarter Saturday in its boys basketball game against Kindred.

Kindred had poured in 19 points against the Nuggets in the first quarter, prompting Hawley head coach Jed Carlson to rearrange his team’s defensive scheme to a 1-3-1 zone.

The change brought results and helped the Nuggets to a 65-54 win over the Vikings during the 23rd annual Fargo Oak Grove Shootout at the Fargo Civic Center.

“We switched to the 1-3-1 zone, and that led to some tips and steals for us,” Carlson said. “It got us going and provided us some offense, too.”

Junior forward Ben Ellefson scored 30 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to pace the Nuggets (5-8).

“We knew (Kindred) was a good shooting team coming into the game,” Ellefson said. “They like to drive to the basket and we had to stop them from doing that with our 1-3-1 zone. That zone seemed to work at slowing them down.”

Kindred (7-4) turned the ball over 30 times.

The Nuggets out-rebounded the Vikings 33-25, with Ellefson dominating down low on both ends of the court.

“My outside shot wasn’t falling, so I tried to get inside and gets some points off of put-backs,” Ellefson said. “I also tried to draw some contact and get to the free-throw line.”

Senior forward Eric Bachmeier scored 17 points to lead the Vikings.
