Dorow's buzzer beater propels Spuds past Packers

MOORHEAD – Cody Dorow did something dramatic Friday night, a feat he didn’t think he had done since grade school.

The Moorhead junior made a running 18-footer at the buzzer. That basket lifted the Spuds to a 57-55 home victory against West Fargo in nonconference boys basketball.

“That’s my first varsity buzzer beater,” Dorow said with a smile. “I had them back in first and second grade, but really nothing since then.”

Moorhead (5-7) trailed by as many as 10 points early in the second half before it rallied for victory.

“We really needed this win,” said Dorow, who finished with a team-high 17 points. “Hopefully this is where we get over the hump to becoming a good team again.”

West Fargo (5-3) had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Packers were a Dorow miss away on that final shot from playing in their fourth overtime game this season.

“We’ve got to learn to finish the game,” said West Fargo senior Travis Schock, who finished with a game-high 27 points. “We’ve been in a lot of close games and we haven’t gotten that down yet.”

Schock helped keep the Packers close late in the second half, scoring two baskets in the final 90 seconds. The 6-foot-3 forward had a highlight-reel dunk that tied the game at 53-53 with 1 minute, 12 seconds to play. On the play, Schock drove baseline before dunking over the top of a Moorhead defender.

“Even our team was a little fired up about that one,” Dorow said. “He’s an awesome player.”

Spuds junior guard Shane Steckler sank two foul shots to give his team a 55-53 lead with 17 seconds remaining.

Schock answered again by gathering his own miss and scoring an inside basket to tie the score at 55-55 with around 5 seconds to play.

That set the stage for Dorow’s heroics. With 3.8 seconds remaining, the Spuds inbounded under the West Fargo basket.

Dorow took the inbounds pass and raced the ball over halfcourt. The 6-foot-3 guard then sliced in between a few West Fargo defenders before he let fly with a running shot soon after he drove inside the 3-point arc on the left wing.

“It was a really good shot,” said Schock, who had three dunks in the game.

Dorow’s shot went through the basket as time expired. He was swarmed by teammates and fans moments after the buzzer had sounded.

“I had no idea,” Dorow said. “I didn’t really see it go in. I saw everybody freak out, and that was fun.”

The Packers scored the final seven points of the first half, and first six points of the second half to build a 10-point lead.

Schock capped that string with two foul shots to give the Packers a 38-28 lead with 16:41 to play in the second half.

The Spuds countered with a 13-2 surge. Senior guard Tyler Eidsness capped that rally with a baseline jumper that gave Moorhead a 41-40 lead with 11:05 remaining.

Neither team led by more than two points in the final 12 minutes.

“We were lucky to make a play at the end,” said Dorow, who scored nine points in the second half.
