Fargo Davies cruises to EDC boys hoops win over Fargo North

FARGO – Last Saturday in an overtime loss to Fargo South, the Fargo Davies boys basketball team began that game without scoring a point in the opening eight minutes.

There was no such drought Friday night at the Spartandome.

The North Dakota Class A, No. 3-ranked Eagles scored early and often during a 109-64 Eastern Dakota Conference victory over Fargo North.

Davies (6-1, 5-1 EDC) led 20-18 with 12 minutes, 15 seconds left in the first half and proceeded to go on a 17-2 run to grab control of the game.

“We talked about having a better flow offensively,” Fargo Davies head coach Bart Manson said. “We wanted to play with a little more energy than we did against Fargo South last weekend. We did that tonight. We got ourselves going right away, and when we get the ball in the hoop early on, it usually carries us the rest of the game.”

Senior all-state guard Tanner Kretchman scored 26 points to lead the Eagles. Davies had five players score in double figures and finished with 15 3-pointers as a team.

Six of those 3-pointers came from junior guard Collin Larson, who scored 18 points.

“We played well as a team and moved the ball around really well all game,” said Larson. “When we make early runs, it makes it easier on everyone and helps us get the ball in the hoop.”

Senior guard Andrew Kozlowski added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.

Kozlowski and Kretchman were the Eagles’ most experienced varsity players when the season opened, but Manson has been looking for other players to build around his two standout guards as the season has progressed.

Senior Ahmed Hirsi and junior Austin Schultz scored 15 and 10 points, respectively, for Davies.

“We have been trying to get more balance and get more kids to step up for us,” Manson said. “If Tanner and Andrew are having an off night, we will need other players to help us or even carry us.”

Bailee McLachlan scored 14 points to pace the Spartans (1-6, 1-4).
