VIDEO: Finley, N.D., native is looking for love on MTV
While Ostrom is back to his own reality in Fargo, keeping the results of the show a secret, he’s about to watch as his story unfolds for his friends, family and fans across the world.
“It’s definitely going to be a wild ride,” he said.
The show, which premieres at 10 p.m. Tuesday on MTV, will feature 10 women and 10 men, who have gone through a rigorous matchmaking process to be paired with their perfect mate. The catch is that the results weren’t revealed to the contestants. Living together in Kauai, Hawaii, the 20 singles have 10 attempts to find everyone’s match. If they do so successfully, they split $1,000,000.
“This is something that’s never been done before,” Ostrom said. “It’s basically a love experiment.”
Looking for enlightenment
Ostrom said he auditioned for the show because his past relationships never quite worked out.
“I kind of always feel like for some reason I screw it up,” he said. “Or, I just think there might be something else out there. I just get to thinking too much.”
But Ostrom wasn’t just looking for love when he sent in his audition tape last August.
“I thought there was going to be a great opportunity to (find someone),” he said. “But I won’t lie. That wasn’t my first reason to do it.”
It wasn’t the $1 million that intrigued Ostrom either. He didn’t even know about the large cash prize until after the filming began.
Ostrom said he was looking for enlightenment. He wanted to learn about different cultures and meet people from different walks of life.
“If I found love, that would be a bonus,” he added.
As for whether or not he’s found it, Ostrom said you’ll have to watch the show.
He said there will be drama, love, relationships and fights.
“There’s not a night you’ll watch this show that you won’t be entertained,” he said.
“I promise you that.”
‘The same old guy’
While his time in Hawaii is revealed to the world one episode at a time, Ostrom is back to his regular life working at Noridian Healthcare Solutions in Fargo and serving part time at Shotgun Sally’s Rock N Roll Saloon.
“I’m the same old guy,” he said. “I’m not doing anything too crazy.”
Aside from friends and family asking questions about the show, he hasn’t received too much added attention. And, he said, he’s always been a pretty private individual, so it hasn’t been too difficult to keep it all a secret.
Although, when the show airs on MTV, he said he’s prepared to receive some attention, especially on social media.
He also hopes the show will open some opportunities for him in the future. He said he has always wanted to work in the entertainment industry as a comedian.
If the show hadn’t worked out, he said, he planned to go to California and audition for The Groundlings, a comedy school in Los Angeles. And he said that’s still an option. As for now, he’s just anxious for the premiere of “Are You the One?”
MTV fans can join Ostrom at Shotgun Sally’s in Fargo for a premiere party Tuesday. Fans can also follow Ostrom on Twitter at @dillanhoward. The official hashtag for the show is #AreYouTheOne.
