No. 5-ranked Davies tops Fargo North in EDC girls basketball

FARGO – Despite having troubles holding onto the ball Friday, the Fargo Davies girls basketball team created plenty of offense.

The Eagles overcame a plethora of turnovers to post a 67-47 Eastern Dakota Conference win over Fargo North at the Spartandome.

The turnover tally for Davies ended up at 26, however, the Eagles’ patience and rebounding severed as a remedy.

“We made good decisions on when to shoot the ball,” Fargo Davies head coach Tonah Safranski said. “Sure we had the turnovers, but we also made good reads on offense. We had several players step up and hits shots for us.”

Junior forward Alexis Klabo scored 27 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to pace the Eagles (6-2, 5-2 EDC).

Klabo scored 19 of her 27 in the second half and broke her own school record set earlier this season by one point.

“Lexi (Klabo) has a knack for where the ball is going to be and puts herself in great position to score points,” Safranski said. “We can post her up low or get her to flare out on a screen. If she does that consistently, we have a lot of success.”

Senior Katelyn Olson also finished with a double-double for Davies collecting 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Davies led 28-19 at halftime and never trailed in the second half.

“Their length got our offense out sync a little bit early on,” North head coach Derek Ouren said. “A couple of our players had a few of their shots swatted down low, and after that I think we started to settle for 3-pointers. We are a perimeter shooting team, but when they aren’t falling is when we get into trouble.”

North (3-4, 2-3) never was able to capitalize on Davies’ turnovers. Committing 18 turnovers as a team didn’t help the Spartans, either.

“It was a rough one,” Klabo said of the turnover-filled game. “We were able to clean up our passing in the second half and find the open players.”

Senior guard Kelsie Schmiess scored 13 points to lead the Spartans.

Davies out-rebounded North 48-22.
