Japanese soldier, who didn't know his country had surrendered World War II for 29 years, dies

Hiroo Onoda, a former Imperial Japanese army Intelligence officer, died Thursday at age 91 in a Toyko hospital.

Onoda was still wearing his military uniform when he was found in 1974. He had remained on the island for 29 years after World War II without knowledge Japan had surrendered decades before.
