Milnor's Bussman signs to play basketball at Valley City State

MILNOR, N.D. – Milnor boys basketball standout Briton Bussman thought about waiting to make his college decision, but the 6-foot-3 senior all-state guard broke the news Thursday.

Bussman – North Dakota’s leading prep scorer – signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Valley City State University.

“I have always wanted to play at the next level,” Bussman said. “I think this will be a great opportunity for me to go in there and compete right away.

“Most of all, it was a really good fit with the coaching staff,” Bussman added. “I felt comfortable and wanted to get it done.”

Bussman, who is averaging 26.3 points per game this season, helped Milnor to the Class B state title last season and has propelled the No. 1-ranked Bison to an undefeated start to the 2013-14 season.

“Briton is just a great kid,” Milnor head coach Benjamin Nelson said. “He is a good student and a great leader for us on the basketball court. It is wonderful for him, and I think it is great for Valley City State too. They are getting a really good student-athlete.”

With his college decision out of the way, Bussman said now he can focus solely on Milnor’s quest of returning to the state tournament.

Milnor is on a 21-game winning streak dating back to last season.

Bussman also averages 8.1 rebounds per game.

“Briton has improved every year that I have been his coach,” Nelson said. “With where we are at as a team and where he is at individually, he has seen a lot more pressure. Teams are scheming defenses specifically to slow him down, and for him to continue to produce like he has is a testament to the time he has put in over the years.”
